Domestic Violence In The Workplace Summit

October 30, 2003

A  Message  From Attorney General Roy Cooper

According to a recent study, 4.8 million women in the United States are the victims of domestic violence each year. Domestic violence reaches into homes all across our state and our country. It also reaches into our workplaces. As both an employer and the state’s chief law enforcement officer, it is my goal to help make every workplace safe for employees including those who are the victims of domestic violence.

To tackle this critical problem, my office along with the Council for Women/Domestic Violence Commission and the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence will host a summit on October 30, 2003 that will focus on the impact of domestic violence on the workplace. I would like to invite you and your business to join us for this important summit.

Domestic violence does not stay at home when victims are on the job. It is my hope that you will attend this summit to learn more about what you can do to make both our homes and our workplaces safe from this devastating crime.

2003 Domestic Violence in the Workplace Summit

The goal of this first Summit is to increase awareness of the financial impact and security risk of domestic violence in the workplace.  To accomplish this, we will provide North Carolina employers with the management tools to develop support and protection for victims and to hold abusers accountable.

Our objective is to have a successful delivery of, and broad participation in, a state wide, one-day summit on the subject of domestic violence in the workplace.

The Summit will feature  nationally recognized experts on domestic violence in the workplace and plenary sessions on reducing employer liability and enhancing security.  Various workshops providing information for the successful implementation of domestic violence initiatives for corporate participants and products for dissemination, such as policy, plans, and public awareness, will be available.
